On the 25th October 2017, a pharmaceutical company called AstraZeneca collaborated with Taylor's University School of Pharmacy to hold a Health Screening and a Talk in conjunction with their Youth Health Programme. However, the volunteers from Taylor's University were not only students from School of Pharmacy but also from School of Biosciences.
The volunteers gathered at 9 am to help the representatives from AstraZeneca to set up their booths opposite LT1 and the whole e-quarium room was booked from 9 am to 4 pm for the Health Screening. Once everything was settled, the volunteers were assigned to help out in different booths and were then briefed about the flow of the Health Screening.
At 10 am, the Health Screening flow started with the registration booth. Once the participants have registered, they would then proceed to the next booth where the volunteers from School of Biosciences would take their blood pressure. Adjacent to the blood pressure monitoring booth was the body mass index (BMI) booth. At the BMI booth, representatives from AstraZeneca measured their height and weight and then referred to a chart to find out their BMI.
Next, the participants would have to proceed to the e-quarium to test for their sugar level using AstraZeneca's limited HbA1C test kit as well as test for their cholesterol levels. After obtaining the results from each booth, the participants would then proceed to the last booth where representatives from AstraZeneca would evaluate their results. The representatives also provided counselling for each participant on the lifestyle changes that they may have to follow if any of their results from the tests were out of the normal range.
The Health Screening was initially planned to take place from 9 am to 4 pm while the Talk would start at 2 pm and end at 4 pm. However, the response and support from the participants was unexpectedly well that by 1 pm, the limited HbA1C test kit finished and the Health Screening officially ended.
At 2 pm, the talk started with the opening speech by our Executive Dean, Professor Thomas. It then continued with the first speaker which was AstraZeneca's Director of Human Resources, Dato' Derrick Khoo. Dato' Derrick Khoo talked briefly about the jobs offered in AstraZeneca and explained briefly about the company itself. He then gave the audience an idea of what AstraZeneca is looking for in their employees and how to be an ultimate AZ'er.
Next, Miss Cheng Hui who is the Business Director in AstraZeneca was invited to speak about her working experience ever since she graduated. She spoke about how she went from being a Hospital Pharmacist to being brave enough to make the decision to move to a pharmaceutical company like AstraZeneca. She also described her whole experience from starting as a sales representative in AstraZeneca and how she worked her way up to who she is now, a Business Director. Besides that, Miss Cheng Hui emphasized that AstraZeneca is a company that aims to help their employees to grow not only as any individual but also as a team player and that the support she has received from the company and her colleagues is one of the reason she is where she is today.
After her sharing experience, she invited various other AstraZeneca employees from different departments to briefly explain their jobscope so that the audience were able to grasps the skills they would require to work in the different fields offered in a pharmaceutical company.
By 3.30 pm, our MC, Leong Chee Hong invited the third speaker, Miss Adeline Tay to the stage. Miss Adeline Tay is a Diabetes Nurse Educator working in AstraZeneca and she gave a talk generally on the different types of diabetes. She also covered the causes of diabetes and explained how it is actually broader than just eating sweets alone.
Finally, at 4pm, Miss Vily Law who is a Respiratory Nurse Educator working in AstraZeneca was invited as the last speaker to the stage to talk about smoking. She talked about the risks of smoking as well as the benefits of quiting it.
After the final speaker, the floor was open for a Q & A session. The speakers also asked the audience questions and those who answered were given laptop bags. The event officially ended, after Dr. Jason Loo represented the School of Pharmacy to hand out appreciation gifts to each speaker.
